In its worst stages depression becomes severe depression.  Until it’s so severe that months or even years of treatment are required, most people do nothing about it.  Some type of depression affects over 15 million Americans each and every year.  Medical attention will only be sought by about 4.5 million of these people.  It seems that the age-old stereotypes that are associated with any mental illness leads these individuals to conceal their affliction and try to wish it away.  Wishing on a star won’t solve severe depression.  Over time the disease progresses to the point it completely takes over the victim’s life.

Many people who have this disease are hesitant to admit it.  Severe depression does not make you sub-human.  You’re still a full person.  Like heart disease or cancer, depression is an illness.  It requires treatment and support.  When it becomes severe depression the symptoms become even worse.  Everything associated with the illness becomes more intense.  Your ability to adapt both socially and professionally becomes more and more difficult.  Negative feelings intensify to make you a total loner.  There are no steps that can avoid this illness.  However, it can be treated.  It’s vital to detect it early.

Diagnosis and treatment require an expert eye to notice the signs of depression.  Depression is associated with many symptoms.  One of the most obvious is that the inflicted will begin to draw into themselves.  Dealing with other people becomes too difficult.  Hopelessness, helplessness and even remorse consume them.  These people become moody.  In the severest of cases those suffering from this disease may feel that they hear voices or believe they have received visits from the devil.  At some point many of these victims of Severe Depression will consider suicide as a way of escape.  Only treatment and the support of family and friends can help.

Severe depression is terrible.  Those who suffer it cannot live normal lives, as they once knew it.  Losing the ability to control your own life is terrible.  Hope is slim, but treatment is hope.  Typically, anti-depressants and ‘talk therapy’ are prescribed to treat depression.  There are also many support groups available to assist these individuals to adjust in society.  Treatment starts the process of recovery for people.  It’s very possible to regain control over their lives.  To reach that point one must first face their illness and pursue solutions.
