Anything taken too much is bad for the health. A little stress is actually good, as it could serve to help you function at your best. However, stress that seems a little too much could take a physical, as well as mental, toll to your body. Stress should be managed in order for depression or anxiety to be prevented.

So how should you do it then? The following are tips and advice to help manage stress.

Write it out, schedule it out.

It is best to write down everything that seems to be overwhelming. You will find a things-to-do-list much easier to manage than having errands all crumpled up in your head. Writing down the tasks, and putting a specific schedule and time to do them, helps anyone manage activities one chunk at a time. Crossing out an activity that has already been accomplished is very rewarding and could actually help you feel more relaxed when doing the other tasks at hand.

One at a time works.

Focus and put all your attention specifically on one task at one time. It does not help to feel panicky about the other undone or to-do tasks. Thinking about them only adds unnecessary stress and could even hamper in doing the task you are attempting to accomplish at present.

Relax and take it slow.

At least, try not to expend too much energy on activities that are currently not priorities. This is in order for your energy to be not easily expended on the tasks that are not that important, at least for now.

Delegate, delegate, delegate.

You need not do everything all at once, and you need not do everything on your own. Ask for help, get help, or pay for help. When there is a feeling of being overwhelmed that is cropping up, hire someone to mow the lawn or get a sitter for your children. The feeling of being pressed to finish something on time will somehow be eliminated if tasks are delegated. It takes a load off unnecessary worry and anxiety. Moreover, it is easier checking up on how things are, than worrying yourself sick doing everything on your own, all at once.

Give yourself a reward.

You deserve it. Acknowledging your accomplishments, no matter how big or small, is an effort that is necessary before getting on to the next tasks and activities. It reduces stress and could even make you happier in doing the next task.

Give yourself a break.

You need it to be more productive. A ten to fifteen minute break during your work is necessary. Go visit a café nearby, take a quick brisk walk, or do anything to put your mind off work, at least for a while. This is necessary to refresh and recharge. Believe it or not, you can also stay in your work and sit with your eyes closed as you visualize a peaceful landscape or a relaxing scene. This frees the stress from your muscles and your mind.

Relax and be cool. Doing so makes you healthier, happier, and a lot more productive.

Everybody goes through phases of life, when he/she is feeling down, or depressed, for a shorter stretch of time; it may be after a painful emotional experience, like losing a loved one, or breaking up with a partner, or even increased stress, and the feeling that one is not capable of doing his/her daily duties because of this increased stress.

However, in most of the cases, these depressed moods disappear in the normal course of everyday life, with the help of enjoyable activities, or the support of friends. However, still, these signs of depression seem to persist sometimes, in which case, we could really be talking about a case of depression. It is quite important thus to be aware of the signs of depression, as the sooner one discovers that he/she is having depression, not just feeling sad for a shorter time, the sooner can something be done about it, be it a change in the normal routine, seeing a doctor and being diagnosed or attending psychotherapy sessions for example.

Signs Of Depression

There are a variety of symptoms of depression, naturally, you will not be experiencing all of them, but they can be regarded as quite characteristic. You will generally be feeling helpless and hopeless, having a bleak outlook on your life and your future in general, feeling that nothing can ever possibly get better. You can also experience changes in your sleep pattern, insomnia, or hypersomnia, not being able to sleep at all, or oversleeping, and as a result, feeling fatigued all day. You can be irritated, easily annoyed or angered, even over small matters. As a further sign of depression, you can experience significant weight loss or gain. Having a bleak outlook on life, you will generally not enjoy even your favorite activities and pastimes or sex for example. In more severe cases, one who is suffering from depression may also have suicidal thoughts as an important sign of depression. You will also have concentration problems, as a result of your feeling fatigued and of course your general loss of interest, you will not be able to focus on the task you are doing and will tend to forget things.

To be able to recognize the signs of depression as soon as possible, it is also important to be aware of some risk factors for depression. Factors, such as loneliness, financial problems, and lack of social support, health problems and persisting physical pain or relationship problems can easily trigger depression. People who have suffered a childhood trauma or physical abuse as a child, or those who have a family history of depression are also at more serious risk, regarding the signs of depression and the illness itself.

Massage And The Power Of Touch – Relieving Depression Naturally

Humans are tactile beings. From the moment of our birth and throughout our lives until death, touch plays an important role in our health. For massage therapists, it is very easy to see how the skin, as the largest organ of the body, reflects physical and emotional health. In a massage therapy treatment, most therapists have seen a visible relaxation of clients either during or after a session. In our own lives, we can all remember a time when hurt or distress has been healed by touch, such as Mom kissing a banged up knee, or when we’ve received a comforting hug from a family member or friend. Touch can also express joy and affection, as well as the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, where touch can trigger fear and pain.

What role should touch play in our daily lives? It has been well researched and documented that positive touch, that being touch from someone you trust done with your consent, can affect us at a cellular and hormonal level. The release of endorphins makes us feel good, and actually contributes to not only our physical health, but also our emotional health as well. There have been several studies which have indicated that massage therapy has made a positive impact in relieving anxiety. Much to our detriment, however, the inclusion of touch in our daily lives has taken a back seat to other priorities.

We live in a society where touching on a social level has become taboo. In a nutshell, we are touch deprived. A world-wide study done in the 1960’s noted the number of times pairs of people touched each other when out at a cafe. Peurto Rico was at the top of the list, with 180 times an hour; at the bottom of the list was Britain, at 0 times per hour (yes, that’s right, ZERO). This would seem to indicate that a normal, healthy social gesture seems to have become degraded to something which is not appropriate and needs to be avoided. In our own culture we seem to be becoming more touched deprived; in an article ‘The Touch Deficit’ by Patti Wood, 15% of Canadians go for 3 or more days without touching another human being. Could this be a contributing factor to our soaring levels of depression ?

How might we change this unfortunate trend? In addition to changing other lifestyle factors, the inclusion of regular, positive non-sexual touch may very well help turn the tide on our cultural downfall. Therapeutic massage has been extremely well researched, and we all know it can assist our function at a physical level, by relieving headaches, back pain and other common complaints. But did you realize that massage therapy also improves our function at an emotional level, contributing to decreased depression and anxiety, improved sense of well-being and improved sleep?

I would suggest that if you are feeling even a little (or a lot) depressed , that massage therapy may be able to help you. If you feel great, I would hazard a guess that you may feel even better by taking an hour out of your day and taking care of yourself. Think of it as a preventive therapy, and enjoy the benefits of touch.
