Great And Rewarding Ways To Relax

Having a couple relaxation techniques can save your life, because stress is more than just uncomfortable it’s also dangerous to your health. Disciplined practices such as meditation can help relieve that stress, but what if you don’t have the time? Maybe you need to try a few of these simple ways to relieve stress.

1. Give someone a big, loving hug. Hugging usually entails getting a hug in return..and there is nothing more relaxing than being in someone else’s arms.

2. Do it in a different way. Go talk to someone you usually don’t i.e. a member of the canteen staff, or eat lunch on the grass. Just doing anything that breaks the monotony of your normal behavior can relieve stress.

3. Have a long bath. It relaxes your muscles, and gives you a break from those more stressful activities. Some find that an alternating hot and cold shower is even more soothing.

4. Try paying close attention to your thoughts. Spot those ‘nasties’ that lurk just below the surface (hunger, worry, a phone call you need to make) and you can resolve them and feel more relieved. If you practice this awareness exercise, it may become one of your favorite relaxation techniques.

5. Try laughing. The best way for me to laugh is to stand in front of a full size mirror, stark naked! That always gives me a good laugh; especially first thing in the morning. Just make sure that it is a good ‘belly laugh’, one that makes your sides hurt and you become short of breath. Not only will it relax you but it burns calories too!

6. Use music. Keep your favorites at the office, in the car, or wherever you’ll need it most. Music can settle that savage beast that is inside of all of us. Choose the tunes that bring up happy memories and use those to help you.

7. Exit the room for a while. This can really help if the things in the room or related to it are bringing on your stressful thoughts. Why not leave for a little while? Just remember to not slam the door after you!

8. Breath deeply. Try five deep breaths through your nose. Close your eyes and take notice only to your breathing while doing this. It’s like a mini-meditation, and perhaps the most effective of the quick relaxation techniques.

9. Hydrate yourself with something decaffeinated. Caffeine is a stimulant and brings on a rapid heartbeat and increased mental stimulation. This can promote feelings of stress and anxiety.

10. Leave the house. If you have at least ten minutes to spare, going for a walk is one of the best relaxation techniques. While you’re at it, enjoy the scenery or go and talk to that person in technique 2.

11. Remove your shoes. Remember that scene in Pretty Woman where Richard Gere took his shoes and socks off. That reconnection with Nature has a remarkable effect.

Bi-Polar disorder is another moniker for manic depression.  When an individuals mood swings are very irregular with sudden changes from good to bad this is commonly associated with being Bi-Polar.  Depression has many forms.  This is one of them.  Manic depression is not the same as just being sad or upset for over something in particular.  Manic depression is far more sinister.  The diagnosis of being Bi-Polar is just another stage of the disease of depression.  Millions of people in the United States are diagnosed with Manic Depression every year.  In general 17 million people battle depression each year in America.  

The draw back is that only a third of the potentially affected will ever seek medical assistance or get some type of diagnosis.  If you do not look for help than it is very hard to find a cure.  Mental illness is a red stop sign for many Americans, they don’t want to deal with it.  They do not want to be stereotyped as one who must be out of their mind.  It’s very complex when a disease impacts the brain.  When diagnosed there is a stigma that isn’t easy to handle.  But it’s not a sign of being less when this disease is diagnosed.  It doesn’t mean you’re insane.  It means you have an illness like any other.  It can be treated.  First it has to be identified.  

Medicine is still looking for all the causes of depression.  Depression is caused by a wide range of issues.  It is known that biological, genetic, and environmental factors have to be taken into consideration.  It’s well known that a chemical imbalance can contribute.  We also know that stress can play a major role in the advent of depression.  Daily life brings stress, period.  Issues at school, with loved ones, or just the daily grind can cause it.  Depression knows no bounds.  It’s a disease for rich people and for poor people.  Race isn’t an issue.  No color or nationality is free from this illness.

There are similar symptoms no matter the type of depression.  These include mood swings from happy to sad and serious personality switches.  The advent of sleeplessness is another sign of depression.  Helpless feelings, or feelings that the future holds no hope are signs.  When everyday life becomes a chore, that’s depression.  But the depression afflicted have hope.  You can find help.  Prescription medications as well as natural herbs can cure it.  Doctors can also help with talk therapy.  Support groups can also be helpful for those with manic depression.  The first step in the cure is seeking the assistance.

Panic Attacks Diagnosed As Physical Conditions

Having a panic attack is a frightening and often harrowing experience for the person going through the episode. Especially when panic attacks begin occurring, people experiencing them might think that they are suffering from some sort of physiological problem or illness. Often times panic attacks will only exhibit a small handful of symptoms and the symptoms might mislead a health care professional to believe that a problem is physiological rather than mental.

Some physiological symptoms associated with panic attacks that can be mistaken for a physiological problem include difficulty breathing, bowel irritability, nausea, or mental confusion. A person who is experiencing these symptoms may visit their general practitioner with fears that they are suffering heart problems, degenerative mental problems such as Alzheimer, or whatever worse condition that may come to the sufferer’s mind. Even if a panic disorder is correctly diagnosed, it is the tendency of many medical professionals to prescribe medication as a first line of defense, rather than treat the root cause of the panic attack. With a view that medical professionals have all the answers, a person experiencing panic attacks may blindly accept the diagnosis of a medical professional even if the diagnosis is not correct. In an effort to find relief for their problem, they may be taking unnecessary medication that may impair their life or cause them further complications.

Just as important as the physical symptoms of anxiety attacks is the mental root of the problem. Unfortunately for the sufferer of the panic disorder, it is not uncommon for the doctor treating their physical symptoms to be unfamiliar with the needed counseling aspects of treating the patient, and should the sufferer seek counseling for the problem from a therapist, it is not unheard of for the therapist to be unfamiliar with techniques that can provide relief of the symptoms experienced by the panic attacks offer, or dietyar and lifestyle changes that can also reduce the number and severity of panic attacks.

There are more options available to the sufferer of panic attacks then simply being medicated or sitting for hours in the counseling chair. These things are very important but there is more that can be done through lifestyle and dietary changes. There are lifestyle changes such as avoiding stressful situations and getting sufficient rest. The foods a person eats has a great impact on mood and the ability of the body to fight off stress.

Each panic sufferer needs to build a support team to help them. They need to listen to the advice given and research the tools available, but in the end, it is the patient that must decide, based on the advice and options available, what course of panic therapy treatment is right for them.
