Does Anxiety cause Depression?

If you’re experiencing anxiety, you are not alone.Most people today would freely tell you that they are anxious a good part of the day.  But at the same time, there is a connection between anxiety and depression, and one can often lead to the other.  What is that connection and how does this happen?

Two Separate Conditions

Sometimes anxiety and dDepression are things that are experienced by a patient separately, one from the other.  A person may simply have depression as part of their physical and chemical makeup and then be experiencing anxiety on top of it.There are many things that can cause anxiety that happen in our daily lives such as family issues, finances, job stress or friend stress.  They may just be an overly anxious person due to their own nature or personality; some people are just more “high strung” than others.

Their depression is a separate factor than their anxiety, and in these cases anxiety and depression are not related.  You might compare it to how being obese can sometimes lead to diabetes, but sometimes a person might already be diabetic and then gain weight over time.  They are just two separate conditions.

Similar Symptoms for Anxiety and Depression

In addition, there are many symptoms that are similar when it comes to anxiety and depression.  Anxiety can lead a person to be distracted, angry, upset, frustrated, and want to avoid other people and situations.  Depression can have many of the same symptoms.People tend to think that depression is just being sad but some part of depression can be anger and trying to isolate yourself from others.  In cases such as these a person may assume that they have both anxiety and depression when in reality just one set of symptoms is overlapping the other.

Anxiety Leads to Depression

When a person is overly anxious for an extended period of time, this is damaging to them mentally, physically and emotionally.  The body is not designed to be at a heightened state of emergency for days or even hours on end.  When a person suffers anxiety, depression may be a result of that heightened state of awareness.  They are simply wearing themselves out and the body’s only way of coping is to force itself to become depressed.

Additionally because a person is anxious over outside factors these same factors may make him or her feel depressed.  Family problems, job problems, financial setbacks, a divorce or death, needing to move to a new area, and many factors that cause anxiety can also cause a person to suffer from depression.  They have both anxiety and depression because of these outside factors.Anxiety and Depression as you can see are related when you look at it like this.

Dealing with both anxiety and depression is a very difficult set of circumstances for anyone, and even for the family of the sufferer.  While we can’t always remove the causes of our anxiety and cure depression, it is possible to treat and cope with these conditions.There are many different avenue’s to go for for help besides medicine there are therapies to assist.

Anxiety Attacks at Night

It might seem strange that anyone could actually have anxiety attacks at night, since nighttime is when you typically are the most relaxed; having panic or anxiety at work or when paying bills is understandable but why would anyone be anxious when it’s time to go to sleep?

There are many reasons why someone would experience anxiety attacks at night and understanding those reasons is the first step toward dealing with these.  When you realize the root causes of these attacks you can then address those causes.

First, keep in mind that many anxiety attacks at night are simply the brain’s reaction to certain chemical imbalances you may have.  The brain is supposed to release a substance called serotonin on a regular basis; this substance helps to make you feel calm and relaxed.  When the body doesn’t get this in adequate amount, panic and anxiety can set in.  However you can be doing things yourself to bring on these anxiety attacks at night.

As an example, sometimes when you slip into bed you may realize that this is the first chance you’ve had all day to think about things - the rest of your day is spent being distracted by work, family members, and chores.  But now you’re in bed and everything is quiet, and suddenly you start to think about everything that makes you panic-stricken.  This can obviously bring on anxiety attacks at night as these lingering thoughts stay with you as you drop off into sleep.

Some foods may also trigger anxiety attacks at night for some people.  Caffeine and sugar typically make most people jittery, as does alcohol, and some have sensitivities to other foods such as wheat, peanuts, and so on.  If you indulge in any of these foods before bedtime you may be causing those anxiety attacks at night.

Be aware of your own habits and thoughts when it’s bedtime.  Forcibly set aside any anxious or panic-inducing thoughts; tell yourself that you have plenty of time to worry about things tomorrow.  Replace those thoughts with something positive, such as reading a good novel, doing a crossword, or taking a warm bath.  Avoid any foods that seem to trigger anxiety attacks at night or that you have a special sensitivity to as well.  And if this doesn’t help then it’s time to talk to your doctor about what medications or other treatment options may be available to you.
